Why So Hard

© 2010 by Christopher and Maria Clymer Kurtz

She hears the clock through the heavy dark.
She feels her way to a coffee cup.
Why so hard, touching light?
Tangled dreams holding tight.

The school bus takes her kids away.
Alone, she turns to face the day.
Why so hard to earn a dime?
Way too long to closing time.

Why so hard?

Her baby stands in her bedroom door.
Then she’s gone. Where to? What for?
Why so hard, not to know?
Years so fast, days so slow.

Sterile halls, tiled floors,
Daily pills and padlocked doors.
Why so hard? Nothing left.
No memories; mindless breath.
