I never thought you’d be a lovesick fool
You’d always be aloof and cool.
But dancing shoes can look a lot like boots;
A chill veneer can hide a heart tattoo.
There was no spark of fire in your eyes,
No glimpse of lace to fantasize.
Each step was measured, every word polite:
Casual Jekyll; never cupid Hyde.
All that time you were hiding (you hid away)
Deep inside you were pining (how you pined)
Understated the outside (the outside)
A valentine in casual disguise.
You never said a thing to lead me on,
Never eager, never too forlorn.
Your back was straight over your shaky knees,
Until your smile put us both at ease.
